Apartheid is a name for a type of regime and an international crime. The crime of apartheid has a clear definition, and although its origin is historically linked to the racist regime in South Africa, it is now an independent legal concept with a life of its own, which can exist without being founded on racist ideology.
After 15 years of research and legal representation of Palestinians living under occupation, the Israeli Human Rights Organization Yesh Din felt the time had come to investigate in what legal context they were working. The investigation resulted in a legal opinion authored by leading Israeli human rights lawyer Michael Sfard. The investigation focused on the situation in the West Bank (excluding East Jerusalem). The conclusion of this legal opinion is that the crime against humanity of apartheid is being committed in the West Bank. The perpetrators are Israelis, and the victims are Palestinians.
In this webinar Michael Sfard and Sharona Weiss will elaborate on the findings and conclusions of their legal opinion. Munir Nusseibeh, a human rights lawyer and director of the Community Action Center at the Al-Quds University, will give his view on the legal opinion and the topic of Apartheid. He will also brief the audience about the situation in East Jerusalem. The legal opinion already led to a lot of debate and discussion. The organizers of this webinar aim to provide a platform for further discussion and exchange of thoughts around the theme.
