Dear Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee,
We are writing to express our strong support for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian paediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Dr. Abu Safiya stood by his patients during the violence that Israel unleashed.
Dr. Abu Safiya exemplifies the spirit of peace and humanity. Despite enduring the personal tragedy of losing his 15-year-0ld son and facing arrest and interrogation on multiple occasions, he remained committed to serving the children of Gaza – even as his hospital came under heavy bombardment and he himself was injured. His unwavering dedication continued until the moment he was reportedly used as a human shield, forced to witness the killing of four health workers, and subsequently taken prisoner by the Israeli army without charge on December 27, 2024.
His situation is emblematic of the broader situation faced by Palestinian healthcare professionals. More than 300 medical workers have reported abuse and torture in detention, with at least four suspected to have died as a result of mistreatment. Over 1,200 healthcare workers have been killed since the escalation of violence, according to United Nations reports – an unprecedented assault on the medical sector.
Despite the systematic targeting of medical facilities and personnel, the denial of humanitarian access, and the mass suffering of civilians, Dr. Abu Safiya and his colleagues have continued their life-saving work under the most extreme conditions. Their dedication stands as a profound act of resistance and compassion.
One particularly harrowing case – the recent Medics Massacre – saw 15 healthcare workers reportedly executed. On the recovered phone of one of the victims, a video showed his final words: ‘Forgive me, Mom. This is the path I chose – to help people. I swear I didn’t choose this path but to help people.’
In this context, Dr. Abu Safiya’s nomination represents not only his own extraordinary courage and integrity, but the collective sacrifice of Palestinian healthcare workers. Honouring him with the Nobel Peace Prize would be a powerful recognition of humanitarian service under fire, a call for justice, and a message of solidarity with those risking their lives for others.
We urge you to consider this urgent and meaningful nomination. Such a recognition could contribute to restoring Dr. Abu Safiya’s safety and freedom – and would stand as a symbol of hope for all who continue to uphold their humanitarian duty in the darkest of times.
